Bert Ball Spline Maintenance
  • Remove drive-shaft from tail housing. Be careful not to loose the u-joint caps. Lay drive-shaft off the side of transmission.
  • Pull tailshaft out as far as it will go.
  • Remove the 6 hex cap screws
  • Pull back the yellow seal.
  • Pull tailshaft out of transmission. Be careful to catch all 12 balls from inside the ball ring.
  • Remove ball ring.
  • Clean entire shaft & balls. Inspect the ball surface for any cracks or nicks. If nicks or flat spots have occurred, they should be replaced immediately, as ball bearing failure will cause severe damage to your unit.
  • Inspect the wear ring for any abnormal wear.
  • Inspect the aluminium support.
  • Reassemble assembly by installing ball ring to drive tube.
    Note: Lightly coat ball ring and drive tube contact faces with silicone before assembly.
  • Slide shaft into drive tube.
  • Fill all 6 grooves with CV grease.
  • Install 12 1/2" steel balls (2 per groove).
  • Reinstall seal and tighten 6 hex cap screws
  • Install drive-shaft.

Ball Spline Maintenance/Periodic Inspection
To assure that your Ball Spline continues to operate correctly, periodic inspection of your ball spline tail housing should be done at least every 400 laps. In some cases such as muddy rough race tracks you should inspect your Ball Spline just as you would the rest of the race car after a night on a rough track. Use of a high quality synthetic grease such as Red Line or X1R Purple are recommended
